Stress and Perfectionism"
What comes to mind when you think of perfectionism? Do you think of the girl in Biology who always hands in her assignments on time,
neatly done and entirely correct? Do you think of the boy in your homeroom who
is always leaving to go to a club meeting or a track practice or some other
committee or team? Both of these people could be perfectionists, but there are
many misconceptions on what exactly a perfectionist is, and these people may not
fit that description. They could be people who just enjoy doing well at
everything they do. This is a desirable personality trait, unless it is taken to
the extreme...which is when it can become dangerous, leading to stress, nervous
breakdowns, depression, and sometimes even suicide.
Crash dieting
puts bite on teeth
Sure, everyone wants to look thin and toned in
their swimsuits this summer, but crash dieting can affect more than your figure,
it may also wreak havoc on your smile, a California dentist reports.
For example, fasting and/or certain strictly vegetarian diets can lead to a
deficiency of certain important nutrients including calcium, vitamin D, vitamin
B-12 and protein, which are building blocks for healthy teeth and gums,
explained Dr. Heidi Hausauer, a spokesperson for the Academy of General
Dentistry (AGD). Also, crash diets that include high amounts of raw food, such
as vegetables, may increase risk of erosion to the teeth by wearing away enamel.
Famine-induced diet of 'alternative food' plagues N. Koreans
As famine-stricken North Korea heads into the leanest time of the year, the general population is surviving by eating "alternative food," ersatz
foodstuffs that offer little nourishment while bringing on extreme stomach disorders. "Fifty percent of the patients in this hospital suffer from malnutrition, and
30 percent have severe digestive problems from eating alternative food," said Dr. Hyon
Kwang, director general of Puryong County Hospital in North Hamgyong Province.
"I'm So Ugly!"
"I'm so ugly!"-"I really hate my hair, it's so frizzy and never looks nice."-"My freckles are terrible."-"I hate myself, I'm so tall and skinny."-"I'm
fat and to lose weight, I barely eat anything anymore."-"Why couldn't I just have been born beautiful?"-"I'm so ugly and I hate to go to school because I have to show my face to my friends."
Steroid Use by Teen-Age Girls Is Rising
Whether trying to reach stardom in high school sports, working to achieve a fashionable lean-but-muscular look or suffering from a deep psychological disorder, teen-age girls are using illegal anabolic steroids in sharply increasing
numbers. The increased usage among girls, which some researchers attribute in part to a kind of reverse anorexia, has caught up to levels that began to be established by boys in the 1980's. And steroid use, researchers say, exposes girls to the same severe health risks, but with the added potential of destroying their ability to bear children.
Malnutrition plagues the underfed and the overweight
For the first time, the number of overweight people worldwide equals those who are underfed and both groups are victims of malnutrition. "The hungry and the overweight share high levels of sickness and disability, shortened life expectancies and lower levels of productivity -- each of which is a drag on a country's development," said Gary Gardner, co-author of a report entitled "Underfed and Overfed: The Global Epidemic of Malnutrition."
Aliens & Anorexia
The book is, in part, an attempt to legitimize all that is culturally considered "feminine" -- like gossip, anorexia, the zealous examination of emotion -- and therefore weak or silly.
Not just a woman's disease
Misconceptions of male eating disorders keep men from getting the help they need.
Walking up and down the aisle of the local supermarket, Richard Dickinson selected his groceries carefully, but he didn't shop for items to stock in his pantry or refrigerator. Instead, his list consisted of a few bags of cookies, a pumpkin pie, a gallon of chocolate ice cream, a jar of peanut butter, chocolate syrup, and a bag of potato chips. When Dickinson returned home, he sat down in front of the television, made sure no one else was around and began eating. He didn't stop until the cookies, the ice cream, the potato chips and the pie were gone. He then walked to the bathroom, knelt in front of the toilet and purged.
Ice Cream As Performance Food? Female Athletes And Dietary Fat
If youre a female athlete, you may want to consider a high-fat diet. Researchers call the results "striking" and note that the same would not be true for men. Women, they say, burn dietary fat better than men, particularly during the second half of their menstrual cycle. They did stress, however, that these findings might only apply to physically active, athletic women, and that they would not recommend a high-fat diet for sedentary women.
Occult Gastrointestinal Bleeding With Anorexia Nervosa
Excessive exercising is often a prominent symptom of patients with anorexia nervosa but, as with this patient, it may be underreported. The anemia of anorexia nervosa is usually a normochromic, normocytic anemia without iron deficiency. The evaluation of iron deficiency anemia or occult gastrointestinal bleeding in a patient with anorexia nervosa should include a careful assessment of the patient's physical activities.
Exercising With Diabetes
If you have diabetes, one of the best things you can do for yourself is to stay--or begin to be--active. A regular exercise program can help stabilize your blood sugar, reduce your need for insulin and medication, and keep your weight under control. Diabetes increases the risk of heart disease, but exercise can lower it. Best of all, exercise helps you get more out of life.
Very-Low-Fat Diet May Compromise Immune Function, Increase Infection Rate In Trained Runners
Trained runners who severely limit the amount of fat in their diets may be suppressing their immune system and increasing their susceptibility to infections and inflammation, a University at Buffalo study has shown.
