Devers continues to run the race of her life
It's been nine years since Gail Devers was diagnosed with Grave's disease, a condition marked by an overactive and enlarged thyroid gland.
She lived with the following symptoms for 21/2 years: hair loss, protruding eyes, skin problems, mood swings and forgetfulness. Her weight plummeted from 120 pounds to 87. "People were like, 'She's on drugs. She's anorexic,'" Devers said.
Scientists Unmask Diet Myth:
Willpower
"There is no magical stuff inside of you called willpower that should somehow override nature," said Dr. James C. Rosen. To attribute dieting success or failure to willpower, researchers say, is to ignore the complex interaction of brain chemicals, behavioral conditioning, hormones, heredity and the powerful influence of habits. Telling an overweight [or anorexic] person to use willpower is, in many ways, like telling a clinically depressed person to "snap out of it."
Star dies following brain surgery
Lena Zavaroni, who shot to fame as a child performer, died following brain surgery in a final attempt to beat anorexia.
She was so ill that she begged doctors to remove part of her brain that she believed was controlling her anorexia.

I'm a 38-year-old anorexic. There are people monitoring my eating and making me eat. The other day, I threw up and my nose started bleeding. I am not bulimic. Is the nosebleed related to throwing up? Could low blood pressure have anything to do with it?
Rumination: the eating disorder of infancy
Rumination is a relatively rare, potentially fatal syndrome in infants. Two cases are presented: a six-month-old who narrowly escaped surgery when the disorder was not recognized, and a complicated case from the neonatology intensive care unit. Environmental changes and enhanced mothering are described as being critical to correction of rumination and appropriate weight gain.
UF Researchers Explore Use Of Epilepsy Medication To Treat Eating Disorder
A medication for epilepsy holds promise of also helping people who suffer from binge eating. In a small pilot study, nine of 13 patients who used the anticonvulsant medication topiramate reported long-term decreased incidence of binge eating episodes, with four patients ending uncontrolled consumption completely.
