Children in Nepal, Mexico, Antigua, and Maori New Zealand
displayed "a very positive orientation toward obesity
as contrasted to its uniformly bottom ranking and low
preference by U.S.children." Harper points out that in
these cultures, "affluence was often equated with food
availability and with body size, often signaling wealth
power, and prestige."
Don't starve for me, Argentina
Ironically, in the land of beef and "papas fritas,"
eating disorders are rampant. Argentina has a higher
incidence of anorexia and bulimia per capita than either the
United States or Europe. I asked one young woman how the
populace remained so thin in a land awash in rich foods.
"Young women just don't eat," she said. "They
smoke."
