Eating Disorder Poetry

Beautiful Child

Beautiful child
Lend me your ear
I have a story
You need to hear

There was a girl
I knew her well
Tried to be perfect
And then she fell

Her best was
Just not good enough
Filled with self hate
Her smile was a bluff

For so long
She lived this lie
Held her breath
Would not cry

She lost her identity
Lost herself
Stored her brightness
On a shelf

Then years later
She did cry
She got angry
She asked why

She mourned for
The years she lost
If she'd only
Known the cost

She learned that
She was more than weight
She started to let go
Of some of the hate

She learned a word
She never used
She said "No"
"I get to choose"

And finally
I saw her face
Head held high
No disgrace

So always hold
Your head up high
Get angry
Let yourself cry

No one is perfect
Just be you
Love yourself
And you'll get through
